Crowns & Bridges

If you are unhappy with the way your teeth look and function, cosmetic dentistry can help. Modern dental techniques and materials can save your teeth, make them stronger, and improve your smile. Crowns and bridges are two time-tested, safe, and effective options for dealing with damaged or missing teeth.

What is a Crown?

A dental crown is a “cap” made of metal, porcelain, or resin which fits over a damaged tooth. The cap strengthens the tooth, making it easier for you to chew, and protects it against further damage.

The material used for a crown depends on a number of factors. Metal crowns are sturdy but are typically used on back molars for cosmetic reasons. Porcelain crowns look like real tooth enamel and can be used anywhere in your mouth.

What is a Bridge?

A bridge is a dental prosthetic that is used to replace missing teeth. The bridge connects artificial teeth to the surrounding teeth, which also hold the bridge in place.

What is the Process for Getting a Crown or a Bridge?

Crowns require two visits. At your first visit, your dentist will determine whether you are a good candidate for this treatment. (If you plan to get porcelain crowns on visible teeth, you may also want to ask about having your teeth whitened, as crowns cannot be whitened at a later time.)

Next, your dentist will shape the tooth so that the crown can be easily applied. A mold is taken of the tooth which is sent off to the lab that creates the crown. You will be provided with a temporary cap which will be removed at your next appointment when the dentist applies your permanent crown.

A dental bridge may require several visits. At your first visit, your dentist will place a crown over the teeth that will be connected to the bridge. Next, impressions are taken and sent to the lab that creates the bridge.

Your bridge will be installed at your next appointment. However, you may have to visit more than once to ensure that the bridge is positioned correctly.
